On The Open Road - Book Review

Book - On The Open Road Author - Stuti Changle   Publisher - Invincible Publishers Pages - 179 How long it took me to Read - 2 days Review -  OTOR is a story of 3 people - Myra, Kabir and Sandy who're fade up with their lives in some way or the other and want to pursue their dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Ramy is the person who is inspiring all three of them to do what they want. I liked the narration and dialogue between characters and felt that the story moved pretty smoothly. A few plot twists towards the end of novel took me by surprise which I liked! Also Stuti has dealt with multiple issues like mental health, loneliness, the problems any entrepreneur encounters and that of friendship. So, I think it was a pretty diverse read. But I felt stuck at few places and wished the story wasn't dragged out unnecessarily. Another downside of the book was that I didn't feel attached to any character since they lacked depth in personality.  To fin

Night Of Happiness - Book Review

Book - Night Of Happiness Author - Tabish Khair   Publisher - Picador (PanMacmillan) India Pages - 154 How long it took me to Read - 2 days Isn't it a gorgeous cover ?! Review -  This was quite a short read and could've been finished in a day if I didn't had other works to do, but as it went, I read it in two days. This was my first read by Tabish Khair and I fairly enjoyed it. The book has elements of suspense, surprise and mystery ,just as it says on the blurb of the book.  It deals with a pragmatic entrepreneur - Mr. Anil Mehrotra and his right-had - Ahmed. A mysterious story is formed around the latter which the former seeks to resolve and know the truth about his old friend. Ahmed is said to have no wife but then is suspected to have kept his wife imprisoned as Mr. Anil gets to know him more.  Is Ahmed innocent? Or is he a culprit? You need to read the story in order to find out the truth!  Now coming to what I liked about this book. First

Agnes Grey - Book Review

Book - Agnes Grey Author - Anne Bronte Publisher - Alma Classics Pages - 214 (242-including extra material) How long it took me to read - 4 days Review -  Anne Bronte was the youngest of the 3 Bronte sisters and probably is the most under rated of the three. I decided to pick her debut novel as my starting place with Brontes and I don't regret it. This novel was originally published along with Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights (which became famous) in 1846.  It is said to be semi autobiographical in nature since various incidents of Anne's life are written in the book as Agnes' experiences, for e.g., both the writer and protagonist are well-educated daughter of a penniless clergyman; both worked as governesses and had bitter experiences ,etc. But then, I feel, almost all authors leave a part of themselves in their work, either implicitly or explicitly.  The story deals with the development of Agnes as a person. She is treated like a child by h

Black Beauty - Book Review

Image
Book - Black Beauty Author - Anna Sewell Publisher - Penguin Classics Pages - 193 How Long It Took Me To Read -  4 days Review -    "...he said that cruelty was the devil's own trademark, and if we saw any one who took pleasure in cruelty, we might know who he belonged to...On the other hand, where we saw people who loved their neighbours, and were kind to man and beast, we might know that was God's mark, for 'God is Love'."  The story is about Black Beauty, a horse. It explores his feelings as he grows up, passing from one hands to another, being used by humans with  different attitude  for different purposes. It throws light on the relationship we humans share with mock and "dumb" animals.  Its both heart warming and heart wrenching, depending on various anecdotes given. I loved the writing style adopted by the author and how she made me feel the emotions and feelings of a horse so deeply. If you love animals and

Little Women - Book Review

Book - Little Women Author - Louisa May Alcott Publisher - Penguin Classics Pages - 248    How Long It Took Me To Read - 7 days Insta: @bookbeliever Review - I don't know what should I start with, the unique characters or the beautiful plot! Probably I should start with when this story is set and where. So, lets begin and see where this goes. "Little Women" - the story of 4 sisters- Meg (the lady), Jo (tomboy, wanna-be author), Beth (homely and warm) and Amy (spoiled, charming). It is set during the civil wars (1860's) in England.    It is said that these 4 girls are writer and her sisters.  The novel discovers ordinary life of this family in extra-ordinary situations, it depicts the contradictions arising in the lives of these girls. It also has elements of young love, sacrifice and family bonding to it. What I Liked - First of all, I loved the contrasting characters of the 4 sisters and though all of them were adorable at some or th

The Graveyard Book - Book Review

Image
Book - The Graveyard Book (Illustrated by Chris Riddell) Author - Neil Gaiman Publisher - Bloomsbury Pages - 289  How Long It Took Me To Read - 5 days Review - I read Neil Gaiman for the first time and I loved his writing just as much as I had thought I would ! The illustrations are praise worthy and left me wanting for more. Here are my two cents on this novel . Nobody Owens, nicknamed Bod , is a rather unusual boy who lives in a graveyard and is friends with the ghosts. He is raised by ghosts and is unaware of the living world till something forces him to come out of the graveyard.  The story is one of love, care, fear, protection, connection between dead and living and some history elements here and there. You'll find ghouls , sleers and the honour guards in this book, you'll go on an adventure to who is the man Jack and see heart warming emotional connections between the living and the dead.  If you want some spooky read for the fall or winte

Sense And Sensibility - Book Review

Image
Book - Sense And Sensibility Author - Jane Austen Publisher - Penguin Classics Pages - 318 How long it took me to read - 15 days Gorgeous Book. Review - This is the first work of Jane Austen and also the first book by her that I read, so obviously it will always hold a special place in my heart. I was planning to read Austen since a long time but it was just this August that I bought this beautiful edition (from Flipkart). I also listened to a free audio book (on YouTube) for a few chapters when I didn't feel like reading from book. I can't do complete justice to her brilliant work in just a few lines but nonetheless I'll try my best to give you a fair idea about what this book has to offer. The novel is about two sisters - Elinor and Marianne - who are shown as opposite to each other nature-wise. Both of them have heartbreaks in similar manner but each handles the situation very differently, one is very mature and wise while the other is young and has less s
